Significant growth in the Poweraix
Community!
So far in 2007 the community is continuing
to grow at a tremendous rate. Since January
1st the number of registered members has
doubled to over 1800 members, and the number
of user groups has increased 40% totaling 35
user groups from all around the world.
Cheers to the following user groups whose
memberships are growing the fastest:
UG Higlight: NY Metro POWER-AIX/Linux
Users Groups
The NY Metro POWER-AIX/Linux
Users Group lead by Ken Milberg of Future
Tech, had their 3rd meeting, October 25th,
their first one in Manhattan; at IBM - 590
Madison. Speakers included Bharvi Parikh,
System p Specialist for IBM, John Tesch
Ph.D., Certified Consulting IT Specialist for
IBM and Ken Milberg, PMP, Certified Advanced
Technical Expert, System p, for Future Tech.
Bharvi discussed Advanced Power
Virtualization and introduced the new POWER6
architecture and its many enhancements. John
Tesch did a powerful presentation on the new
features of AIX 6.1. Ken's technical
presentation was on IBM's new System p
Application Virtual Environment for x86 Linux
(System p AVE) and he also did a short one on
the overall mission of the poweraix
community. Special guests included Robert
Weiner, Executive Director of Unigroup of NY,
the oldest and most respected Unix users
group in the world, who brought his
membership to the meeting. Isaac Rozenfeld,
leader of OpenSolaris, was also an attendee,
and said a few words to the group. By all
accounts, it was a POWERful evening! Thanks
to their sponsor Future Tech, a Sharp 3D
laptop was raffled off to one of the lucky
attendees! Among other giveaways, were three
types of IBM pens, tea shirts, Unix and Linux
Magazines (Tx to the people at IBM Systems
Magazine) and Linux CDs, as well as plenty of
snacks and beverages. For those that could
not attend, all the presentations have been
uploaded to their user-group home on our
poweraix site. Their next meeting is
tentatively scheduled for late January of
2008. At this time, Ken is trying to organize
a leadership think-tank for the group and
also will be holding a straw poll shortly,
asking members where they would like to hold
the next meeting somewhere in NJ, Long
Island, one of the other 5 boros of NY,
possibly Stamford (CT) or even back to
Manhattan. They don't call it NY Metro for
nothing!
